Where is my winter coat?

Just when one thinks the season is over,

it is just the beginning for some. It all starts at early dawn. As the sun breaks through the horizon, comes a team of professionals anxiously working the field and preparing for the cold winter months. Early October, the aeration and fertilization process of the greens begins, to improve density of the turf and ensure the survival of the roots over the winter season. This process also helps improve air exchange between the soil and atmosphere.
.... con't .... It also protects the turf as it becomes healthier and stronger and is a preventative measure against snow mold disease. The process must be carried out to give the “greens” the best possible chance of survival, but there is no guarantee.  The protection system covers tees, fairways and roughs.

The turf care team has applied the aeration and fertilization process. Now comes the winter coat application. The team uses strong and breathable evergreen covers over the greens. It serves 2 purposes; it protects the plants from desiccation and helps the greens grow faster at the beginning of the new season. The next step; apply either a layer of straw or a sheet of plastic bubbles to serve as insulation, or just leave the evergreen as the only cover (for new greens only). To finish up, a sturdy plastic covers the entire area. It will prevent any rain from forming ice on the grass. In the spring, as snow and ice melts and temperatures rise, to prevent the greens from heating up, it is necessary to be aware as to where these covers are, so immediate action takes place to remove them. The entire process for 38 greens requires 18 employees working 6 days a week to insure that the greens wear their winter coat!

The end is here! The golf season 2012, that is!

An incredible golf season with great weather conditions and superior quality of the greens is coming to an end. John Scott, club superintendent and his team are to be congratulated for another outstanding year. Day after day, maintenance of the greens, bunkers, fairways and practice facility took place to provide a remarkable environment for Summerlea members. Thumps up, Summerlea Golf & Country Club who provides its members with an exceptional lifestyle and access to the tee!

A full calendar of social functions, themed dinners and various tournaments is coming to an end as well. Members, guests and staff alike are happily saying goodbye to season 2012 and looking forward to golf season 2013. From the Brazilian Night in May to the Oktoberfest Closing Tournament in October, the golf and the social events were greatly appreciated and participants came was in large number.

Let’s not forget the BBQs by the poolside. Mingling and socializing under the Summerlea summer breeze, leaves, no doubt a mesmerizing experience. And Chef Juergen’s cooking classes under the sun gave us a chance to improve our culinary skills. The lobster, in its creamy, delicious sauce and exotic flavors gave our taste buds instant satisfaction.

As usual Jim Vandette, Head Golf Professional and his team, took great pride in delivering quality products, exceptional member service and golf programs.

Summerlea guests accompanied by a few members were able to enjoy our First Annual Green Carpet Event. The day started up with a breakfast and registration. The weather condition – hot and humid provided a pleasurable golf experience. We were lucky. With the dark clouds floating over our heads, Summerlea worked its magic and held off the rain until the end of the golf. After golf, every one of our guests raved about the cocktail hour and canapés, à la Summerlea style. Pâtés, lobsters and muscles were part of the delicacies. It never gets old at Summerlea, so they say! The guests departed with a memorable experience and many could not help themselves but to become part of the Summerlea community by becoming a member. We received a quote by one of our guest,

Hi Marise, thanks again for the wonderful "Green Carpet Event” you and your team put on last Monday. As I mentioned to you, I am considering joining one of 2 clubs in the near future. Club X and Summerlea are the only 2 on my short list. I was considering Club X more than Summerlea until I attended the Green Carpet event this week. The day you and your team put together for us really showed me what Summerlea is about. It showed me what I can expect being part of the Summerlea community. I feel very strongly that actions speak louder than words. It was nice to hear you tell us what to expect at Summerlea, but showing us the way you did on Monday was exceptional. Bravo to you and your team. Sincerely, Martin McCarthy.”
It is with a big smile, I share the following words of wisdom, “Success depends almost entirely on how effectively you learn to manage the game’s two ultimate adversaries, the course and yourself.” Jack Nicklaus, source; Fairways of Life by Matthew E. Adams

Le 3e trou du parcours Cascades
The 3rd of Cascades

A truly classic par 3 as the player is challenged with a combination of wind, water and sand. Pin locations favouring the left portion of the two tiered green increase players options. Very easy to make a big number on this hole as aces are very rare indeed!

The blog of a Tour Pro

Considering the nature of North America's most popular pro sports, golf is perhaps the best suited for blogging. In a game where the psychological element can make a player feel invincible or conversely, void of confidence, blogs offer golfers a way to communicate more of the mental aspect to fans.
Former World #1 golfer Ernie Els wrote a weekly blog for pgatour.com throughout the recent 2011 season. His posts provided consistent snapshots as moved through the tournament schedule. It is interesting to track his composure from post to post as he reflects on the different parts of his game - what was working well, and what area needed work. This reality is mutual amongst all golfers; irons work today, but the putter can't find the cup, drives are averaging 280 but they tend to spray to the right. Hearing Els reflect on his round and suggest ways for self-improvement is captivating,  especially since many of us will have seen clips of his round the week previous and let's face it, we're always open to tips.
It appears Ernie will continue his blogging ways this season and we invite you to read the beginning of his first blogpost of 2012. The link at the end can be used to visit his old posts as well. Consider blogging about your own game! It's kind of like adding a "Comments" section to the handicap you submit after your rounds and learn new things about your game. Also, stop by our Summerlea Facebook Page and say hi!
Enjoy Ernie's blogpost below.

Jan. 4, 2012
I'll start my first website report of 2012 by wishing everyone a very Happy New Year. I hope the next 12 months are full of good health and happiness for you and your loved ones. At the end of the day, that is what's really important in life. These past few weeks I've been having a great time with the family down in our house down in Herold's Bay, South Africa. It is lovely for us all to be together, which as you can imagine doesn't happen very often. One of the consequences of a tour pro's life, you might say. Basically, it was real 'switch off' time and that's just what I needed.
Still, I like to balance my downtime with some activity, as well. I'm not one for sitting down and doing absolutely nothing for days on end. It's been great catching up with family and friends and enjoying some of the beautiful spots and things to do along the famous Garden Route here on the Western Cape. Also, I put in some time at the gym and I've enjoyed playing some social golf these past couple of weeks. Staying 'on the ball' during this off-season makes the switch from holiday to work go that bit smoother and it means I can hopefully get into my stride a little more easily.
I know for a lot of you reading this you'll be back at work already. For me, the holiday period isn't quite over, but it will soon be time to grab my clubs and head to my first tournament of the year. Often in the past that would involve a long journey, especially when I started the season with tournaments in Hawaii.
This year it's a different story. Read the rest here.
